Research Interest

I investigate insect morphology and phylogeny since more than 30 years. I started with adephagan beetles but soon extended my research interest to other groups of beetles and other orders of insect. My special interest is anatomy, with a main focus on the skeletomuscular system, and the evolutionary transformations on the phenotypic level.  However, I am also involved in international molecular projects, especially 1KITE. Recent groups I am also interested in are Strepsiptera, Grylloblattodea, Diptera and others. I also investigate impression and amber fossils, especially of †Alienoptera (Dictyoptera) and Coleoptera. More specific fields of interest are the evolution of attachment structures and insect sperm. Recently I developed a keen interest in Formicidae (ants) and also in Psocoptera (bark lice).

Research

Phylogeny and evolution of Hexapoda. A main focus is the application and optimization of innovative anatomical methods (e.g. µ-CT), but we are also involved in an international transcriptomic project (1KITE). Our investigations cover extant taxa and fossils (impression fossils and amber), and adults and immature stages. Specific fields of research are attachment structures, miniaturization and the evolution of insect sperm.
